The key to flawless makeup is proper skin preparation. Tailor your routine to your skin type, but regular monthly facials with light exfoliation and hydration help maintain a healthy, smooth complexion–the perfect canvas for makeup. Plus, the skin pros can get all the leftover gunk that our products can’t achieve.

For dry or mature skin, hydration is essential. Use a gentle, milky cleanser to cleanse without stripping moisture. Don’t forget your lips–a nourishing lip balm is a must to prevent dryness.

Face masks can also work wonders. Apply a hydrating cream or sheet mask for 20 minutes before makeup to plump up your skin. Rinse with cold water to reduce puffiness and boost circulation, then follow with a toner, a serum packed with hyaluronic acid or peptides, and a rich moisturizer. And ALWAYS finish with at least SPF 30.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Ingredients: If you have dry skin, you should steer clear of foundation with ingredients that can further dehydrate or aggravate your skin. Dr. Logerfo educates us that alcohol-based ingredients like ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, oil-absorbing ingredients like talc, clay, and salicylic acid, and fragrances, especially synthetic ones and citrus oils, can all make dryness much worse. Harsh preservatives like formaldehyde-releasing ingredients and sulfates (SLS) can also weaken the skin barrier. On the flip side, Dr. Chacon shares what to look for: “Beneficial ingredients to look out for that will hydrate your skin are Hyaluronic acid, Shea Butter, glycerin, and niacinamide. These will all plump, nourish, and hydrate the skin, leaving it feeling refreshed and dewy instead of dry and dehydrated.”
  • Type: All of our derms agree that individuals with dry skin should opt for liquid, cream, or serum foundations. Matte or powder products can accentuate dryness, making the skin appear dull and lackluster. Additionally, these formulations often lack the hydrating ingredients mentioned above, as they are not in a liquid or cream form.
  • Application: You can apply your foundation with a brush, beauty blender, or your fingers–it’s a personal preference! Whatever you may choose, Dr. Chacon suggests starting with your T-zone and blending, moving to the outward parts of your face.

Best for Blurring

What type of foundation is better for dry skin?

For dry skin, dermatologists recommend opting for hydrating, liquid or cream-based formulas. These wet formulations help create a dewy finish, whereas matte options can sometimes create dry patches and flakiness.

“A dewy and lustrous finish is always good, and it should be lightweight (not heavy and not greasy),” says Logerfo. “For me, there is a fine balance with foundations for dry skin because you want them to be moisturizing, but you don’t want them to be too greasy, overpowering the skin. Some key ingredients in foundations that are helpful for dry skin are hyaluronic acid, squalane, and glycerin. All can help hydrate and smooth dry, flaky skin.”

“Foundations with SPF 15 or higher should be considered as they protect your skin from sun damage,” Reszko adds. “Foundations that are fragrance-free, dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic, and don't contain any harmful chemicals or additives are best suggested as they avoid harmful chemicals and ingredients that could potentially cause irritation and other skin concerns.”

What is the best brand of foundation for dry skin?

While we’ve awarded Armani Beauty’s Luminous Silk Natural Glow Foundation the best overall foundation, Dr. Logerfo warns that matte and powder formulas can make dry skin appear “dull and lusterless”. At the same time, overly dewy foundations can look “slippery and oily.” Thankfully, Armani’s formula delivers the best of both worlds–hydrating without feeling greasy, leaving skin with a naturally radiant glow.

What is the best foundation for dry aging skin?

We’ve highlighted Nars Sheer Glow Foundation as the best for mature skin, offering a formula that nourishes dry, aging skin without emphasizing fine lines or wrinkles. It’s enriched with ingredients that help keep the skin moisturized and smooth–that’s why everyone and their mother stays using it.

Dr. Chacon explains, “If you have aging skin, you will want to look for products that have hyaluronic acid or glycerin in them as an ingredient because it is great for moisturizing the skin. Niacinamide is also a hydrating ingredient to watch for. You will also want to look for lightweight liquid foundations that will not settle into any fine lines or wrinkles.”

"The best foundation for dry, mature skin is to have some great skin care additives like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and retinol to help address various skin concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, combating dryness, and maintaining hydration throughout the day,” adds Dr. Reszko adds. “As you age, your complexion gains texture and tends to lean on the drier side due to your skin’s reduced collagen production.”

What type of base is best for dry skin?

It’s a tale as old as time that we need to moisturize before applying foundation, especially for those with dry skin. “Moisturize your skin with a lightweight serum or cream before applying foundation to hydrate the skin prior to applying foundation,” says Dr. Reszko. “Opt for serums or creams with peptides, antioxidants, and ceramides for optimal hydration.”

Jodi Logerfo, DNP primer is beneficial for even foundation application and a flawless finish. “Dry skin primer should make skin look dewy and shimmery, easing flaws, blemishes, and dryness,” she says. “A dry skin primer should have hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin as well as ingredients to help radiate dry, dull-looking skin.”
