Our face texture changes when we age, and finding a foundation for mature skin that doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles (while offering additional benefits such as brightening and hydration) becomes key. “The purpose of foundation for mature skin is to smooth and even out skin tone and texture,” says Monika Blunder, celebrity makeup artist. “Skin’s natural radiance can also diminish with age. So a little foundation goes a long way because the finish brings a healthy glow and some luminosity back into your face.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: The Dior Backstage Foundation left us completely creaseless, greaseless, and speechless. One single swoop across the face was all it took to look as though we’d been professionally touched up in Photoshop. Adult acne, uneven complexion, and patches on the cheeks were quickly covered in an even layer. We can’t express how delighted we were to discover that the redness under the nose and chin was completely hidden. Using a sponge or our fingertips (a brush took slightly longer to fully blend), the foundation glided smoothly across our skin, and even covered the dark circles under our eyes despite not using any concealer!

Who It’s For: A little product goes a long way with this pick, covering all blemishes and discoloration in a single layer. Once on, it felt incredibly smooth and invisible. It did not leave a greasy or heavy feeling on the skin, but rather a lightweight and airy one—a surprise to us, considering the full-coverage look it created. When we dabbed our skin with some blotting paper, it revealed how the foundation matted down our oily complexion to create a beautiful and healthy glow instead. The overall effect? Looking naturally younger rather than caked up.

Worth Noting: There aren't many shade options for darker skin tones.

Eli, tester: “This was in all honesty I think the best foundation I have used in my life. It immediately made an impressive change on my face. I am not a makeup artist and lack the skills on how to contour and apply makeup like a TikTok star, but all I had to do was one layer of this product—my face looked as if I had it done professionally.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: This serum-based foundation lets skin shine through, softly blurring imperfections without erasing them—so skin looks and feels like skin. Our tester Allison loved how it felt lightweight, but still left her skin radiant. It does offer some sheer coverage and protection—SPF 15—but while our tester did wish it had a bit higher SPF and slightly more coverage when she was dealing with blemishes or dark circles, overall, she loved how it made her look like herself. The coverage lasts all day—our tester tried it against 14-hour days in California's sunnier, warmer, and more humid climate, and it held up as well as it did through her workouts in Iowa.

Who It’s For: If you lean towards a lighter formula that mimics a CC cream or tinted moisturizer, you’ll be impressed with how lightweight and blendable this option is. The blurring property is great for people who want to mask larger pores and fine lines without worrying about product settling or creasing.

Worth Noting: The formula isn't pigmented enough to fully cover blemishes, dark circles, or redness.

Coverage: Sheer | Shades: 18 | Size: 2.24 oz | Finish: Natural

Allison, tester: “This serum-based foundation provides light-medium coverage, and it helps my skin look luminous and natural without covering up every imperfection. My freckles, for example, were tastefully muted but not totally erased, which is my preference!”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Tried and true, we can always rely on L'Oréal to deliver quality products in an inclusive color range. When our tester Jill tried this Radiant Serum Foundation (which, by the way, comes with an additional SPF 50 sunblock), she learned it held a medium coverage fit for blurring over her complexion in a single sweep. If she wanted a little extra coverage, as she did for her red cheeks, she was easily able to build over it with additional applications. We’re happy to report that the extra layering didn’t weigh down the formula or begin to feel cakey.

Who It’s For: This formula’s built-in SPF makes it perfect for multitaskers. In order to create this “radiant” look that the foundation is named after, it does have a bit of a wet appearance to it. That doesn’t mean it’s runny, simply a little oily. We would want to set this up with a primer or finish it with a setting powder for a more matte finish. This would be a great summer foundation, considering the inclusive color range, medium coverage, and added SPF.

Worth Noting: After about half an hour, it began settling into the creases around our tester's eyes, particularly if they had built on a few layers. A single layer kept the overall look pretty smooth.

Coverage: Medium | Shades: 30 | Size: 1 oz | Finish: Radiant

Jill, tester (not shown): “This foundation blended in very nicely. At first, I thought it was about half a shade too light, but after a bit, it settled in and matched much better. I didn’t see any hard edges when I was blending it out, and didn’t feel it sitting on top of my skin.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: You don’t need much else once you’ve covered your face in this Chanel foundation. The luxuriously soft formula glided smoothly over the skin, requiring minimal effort to blend over the whole face. It had a matte, full-coverage finish without feeling caked on, patchy, or bumpy over our wrinkles and acne. Truly, we got great, natural-looking coverage with minimal product.

Who It’s For: Despite its fabulous coverage, the formula felt light and creamy on our tester's face—not necessarily hydrating, but not drying and heavy either, making it especially great for combination skin. It settled in quickly without creasing, and it maintained its soft and silky look throughout the day. We were happy to find something that gives a pore-refining finish, eliminating blemishes and dark spots without combining three different products. The Chanel Foundation did it all in one go.

Worth Noting: It takes some trial-and-error to pick the right shade, as this foundation tends to oxidize.

Coverage: Who It’s For | Shades: 35 |  Size: 1 oz |  Finish: Matte

Kimberly, tester: “I was able to blend this foundation pretty seamlessly into my skin with minimal effort.”

Il Makiage Woke Up Like This Flawless Base Foundation
We’d advise against additional powder as the two powdery consistencies might create creasing

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: With incredible skin care ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and raspberry cell extract, this liquid foundation leaves skin looking so good and fresh. It’s hard to know if makeup that has gone viral on social media is worth the hype, but our tester Carrie was pleasantly surprised. It somehow seamlessly covers imperfections without feeling heavy or caked on. Our tester loved the beautiful, luminous finish that lasted all through the work day and then some.

Who It’s For: Age spots, freckles, blemishes, and imperfections are no match for this full coverage foundation, according to our tester. In fact, she loved the final result so much that she couldn’t think of anyone who wouldn’t fall in love with this foundation.

Worth Noting: Our test didn't love the smell (kind of smell likes alcohol), but it didn't linger once the foundation was applied.

Carrie, tester: “I hadn't used a liquid foundation in awhile so this was a change for me but I really like it!  I had seen this product on a lot of social media ads so I was curious to know if it actually worked as well as it has been portrayed.  In this instance I would say yes!  It really did leave such a nice coverage without being too heavy and the luminous glow was amazing.”

The formula isnt pigmented enough to fully cover blemishes, dark circles, or redness

Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: If you want something to aid your skin in looking its best naturally, then you want a buildable foundation. This best-selling option from Giorgio Armani created a beautiful silky finish, veiling imperfections and reducing redness. It’s pretty sheer, but our tester Elena appreciated that it was buildable and seamlessly layered without once feeling heavy, thick, or cakey in areas where she added a little more coverage.

Who It’s For: The hydrating formula felt like a real treat on the skin, especially for drier skin types. It’s almost cooling and soft, providing a watery and silky touch. It comes out in a delicately soft, almost serum-like consistency that simply glides over the face with little effort. It was neither patchy nor did it cling to any area. Even when we exaggerated our expressions, it did not crease into our fine lines. The dewy look was beautiful, particularly in the summer. When we wanted a little more coverage, we patted it down with a powder.

Worth Noting: You’re definitely going to want to go in with something a bit heavier-duty to cover any major texture issues, unevenness, blemishes, or pores.

Coverage: Light | Shades: 40 | Size: 1 oz | Finish: Radiant, dewy

Elena, tester: “This is easily the perfect texture of foundation—creamy, blendable, and a little goes a long way. It's also super buildable because of how light and easy it is to spread across the skin.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: The Nars concealer is a famed favorite, so we were excited to test it and see whether their foundation lived up to the hype. To no one's surprise, we instantly fell in love with this silky, full-coverage foundation. Despite being so rich with color, it didn’t look cakey or obviously made-up on the skin. It simply looked like our skin, but much better, as if it merged with our complexion to look well blended and uniform.

Who It’s For: On top of how great it looks, it also feels invisible. It’s featherlight, so it doesn’t weigh down or feel sticky, making it a fit for those who prefer lighter products. It creates a dreamy natural finish that doesn’t require a powder afterward (unless you like a really matte look). It’s formulated without mineral oil, silicone, or parabens, so we can feel good knowing we’re doing good as well. Thanks to its fresh feel and moisturizing capabilities, we believe it would make for a great summer foundation.

Worth Noting: It’s very liquidy, so it only required one pump of the perfectly opaque foundation to cover the full face.

Coverage: Who It’s For | Shades: 36 |  Size: 1 oz | Finish: Natural

Trisha, tester: “This foundation felt very liquidy, cooling, and soft. It seemed hydrating, lightweight, and with a serum consistency. I did not feel ‘wet’ and it dried very rapidly.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: It may require a few touch-ups for long wear are just *chef’s kiss* for extra protection. With SPF 20, it’s a nice amount of extra coverage to build on your sunscreen (Top Drugstore Pick recommends SPF 30 or higher). Our tester Allison loved how smoothly and evenly this foundation glided on. It was incredibly easy to blend and because it’s so lightweight, it was buildable for a naturally radiant, dewy effect. Supercharged with botanicals and oils, it’s like the ultimate skin care-makeup hybrid—it left our tester’s combination skin hydrated for a nourished, natural, but better complexion overall.

Who It’s For: Our tester said this serum-meets foundation is a win for anyone with dry to combination skin. It’s also a brilliant choice for anyone who hates conventional foundation—it’s lightweight and breathable and leaves skin with a luminous, dewy finish that lasts for most of the day with minimal touch-ups.

Worth Noting: The dropper packaging can become quite messy, especially since the foundation itself is a thick consistency.

Allison, tester: “Over the last few years, I've embraced more of a natural makeup routine with lighter coverage. This product delivers the natural and radiant finish I strive for, with the added benefit of hydration and buildable coverage.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: For nearly 30 years, BLK/OPL has been offering affordable makeup to darker skin tones, and in these three decades, they have perfected the Pore Perfecting Liquid Foundation. It only took one pump of this full-coverage foundation to cover the hyperpigmentation on our face, creating an evened-out appearance without looking heavily made up. The foundation blended seamlessly into our skin, drying pretty quickly into a smooth finish. It felt like our own skin, but better, thanks to its lightweight nature. It also achieved a smooth finish with minimal manipulation, even covering creases on our foreheads and around the eyes effortlessly.

Who It’s For: No matter how much time had passed, our tester's fine lines remained hidden under this foundation. They even noticed how the pores around their nose and cheeks were no longer as noticeable as before. The more it dried, the more natural it looked, and they felt confident and radiant.

Worth Noting: It’s not particularly hydrating, so we do recommend layering some moisturizer underneath first.

Coverage: Full | Shades: 12 |  Size: 1 oz | Finish: Radiant

Nikki, tester: “This foundation had a slight blurring and smoothing effect on my skin. I felt like my larger pores on my nose and cheek area were not as noticeable as they were before applying this product. The foundation looks very natural and smooth. The more it dried, the more pleased I was with the finish and the appearance of my skin.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: We tested this foundation on post-menopausal skin, which features fine lines and wrinkles throughout. It passed with flying colors! Since heavy foundation tends to settle into creases, this lightweight formula was just perfect. It evened the redness around our nose and between our eyebrows, covering some of the hyperpigmentation on our cheeks. Not once did it create a patchy look or cling to any bumps. Instead, it smoothed over the surface in a single luxurious pump, blurring imperfections and camouflaging shadows to create a look that resembled our real skin, but 10 years younger.

Who It’s For: This pick blends skin care ingredients with foundation coverage, making our tester look and feel nourished and hydrated. A quick blotch test with our fingers and blotting paper revealed that there was no transfer either, which is quite impressive. That’s because the formula sinks into the skin in a moisturizing and nourishing way. The brand, which originated as a skin care line, blends skin care benefits into the formula to create a 360-degree beneficial product.

Worth Noting: We wish more people could benefit from these results, as the foundation isn’t offered in a wide range of colors.

Coverage: We’d advise against additional powder as the two powdery consistencies might create creasing | Shades: 10 | Size: 1.01 oz |  Finish: Sheer

Sydny, tester: “I was pleased that the foundation didn't sit on the surface of my skin but melted right in. It felt moisturizing and nourishing. It improved the look of my skin, but didn't look artificial or 'masky.' If you know what I look like without foundation, you might be able to tell, but if you don't, you'd just think I had good skin for my age.”

Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection
LOréal Paris Age Perfect Serum Foundation at Amazon

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Pat McGrath’s Sublime Perfection foundation has an array of winning points. The first is that the lightweight formula is buildable, so we were able to customize our look from little coverage to full coverage, and we did so without getting a heavy or stuffy feeling on the skin. The second is that the formula glided right over our forehead creases, nasolabial folds, and bumpy chin, concealing any unevenness. Even after several hours of wear, the foundation never settled into those fine lines. Lastly, it’s oil-free, so our pores felt clog-free, and it gave us a clean feeling throughout the day.

Who It’s For: This formula doesn’t settle into fine lines, even after hours of wear for those always on the go. The final look is a satiny finish, which looked radiant and beautiful on its own. However, it could use powder for a more settled look. Considering the wide range of shades Pat McGrath offers, the lightweight feel, and the ability to cover fine lines, the whole day, we think this would make a fantastic everyday foundation for women over 50.

Worth Noting: The foundation isn’t a one-stop shop for perfect coverage. But we didn’t mind since a concealer is already part of our everyday makeup routine.

Coverage: Medium | Shades: 36 | Size: 1.18 oz | Finish: Satin, natural

Nikki, tester: “The foundation did not sit on my skin or feel heavy at all. The lightweight liquid formula is literally weightless. After the first couple of passes you could not detect that I was wearing foundation.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: One thing Fenty Beauty will have is an extensive color range, so rest assured, you’ll find the perfect hue match here. For our best over 40 foundation, we picked this medium to full-coverage option that conceals without caking. The formula is lightweight but highly pigmented, so it felt and looked good on. We used less than two pumps to achieve our desired look: A soft matte complexion with all our dark spots perfectly covered. Anything that needed additional coverage was easy to build on, as the foundation dried quickly, and the second layer blended on naturally.

Who It’s For: All of our forehead lines, creases around our eyes, and nasolabial folds were expertly blurred over with this pick without looking obviously caked up, making it great for those who normally struggle with this issue. Because it matted down so quickly (not to be mistaken with looking dry), there was practically zero transfer onto our fingers or clothes. Our skin looked normal and not tacky, hydrated yet not wet. It also stayed put throughout the whole day without getting runny or falling into the bumps on our skin.

Worth Noting: It may feel too matte for those with drier skin.

Coverage: Who It’s For | Shades: 50 |  Size: 1.08 oz | Finish: Matte

Nikki, tester: “I definitely could see a bit of blurring and smoothing with this foundation. I would describe it as my skin but slightly better. The pores on my nose and surrounding cheek area where my pores are larger did not appear as large after application.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Vegan collagen peptides, ceramides, and squalane come together in this clinically-tested skin tint that delivers a surge of hydration and leaves a fresh, radiant glow. Our tester, Roxanne, says it’s a great product for everyday use—it gives just enough coverage while keeping your skin plump with moisture. Because of the moisturizing benefits, it doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles. It works as well as a base for concealer or foundation, as well as a lightweight, sheer wash of coverage.

Who It’s For: If you’re looking for a foundation and moisturizer in one, you’ll love this tint. The coverage is light and natural, and it brilliantly evens out your skin tone and keeps skin hydrated—something those with dry skin types will really love.

Worth Noting: Avoid overprepping skin before applying this skin tint to steer clear of pilling and greasiness.

Coverage: Light | Shades: 20 | Size: 1.58 oz | Finish: Sheer, radiant

Roxanne, tester: “This tinted serum is very creamy and light and not too thick to spread. I find it similar to a water-based moisturizer. However, it has excellent coverage. It's easy to apply and spread around my face, including over my eyes. It did not remain wet on my face and blends with my skin pretty quickly, although it left my skin very shiny.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Those with oily skin often seek out a matte finish for their foundation. The Tom Ford Foundation takes mattifying a step further by drying down our oily complexion and minimizing excess moisture. We preferred using a sponge to pat down this formula, as it created an airbrushed effect for us. It covered the whole face and settled in quickly, leaving zero residue or transfer onto clothes and fingers. As for the coverage, it did a great job at blurring over most of our sun spots and redness. For any darker blemishes, we touched them up with some concealer.

Who It’s For: Almost instantly, the foundation dried down to a powdery and lightweight feel on our skin. It created a great neutral base to layer on any additional products, particularly if we wanted to add some of that targeted illumination on the cheekbones.

Worth Noting: We’d advise against additional powder as the two powdery consistencies might create creasing.

Coverage: Medium | Shades: 40 |  Size: 1 oz | Finish: Matte

Julie, tester: “I would not say that this foundation melted into the skin, but it didn't feel heavy and sit on the surface either. It overall looked very natural and just blended in very nicely.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Dark spots can be tedious to cover, and their shades can range from deep to light. We recommend this buildable and well-pigmented foundation to even out your look and hide any discrepancies. Although it applies quite light at first, it settles and dries very nicely. It’s not oily and almost absorbs moisture instead, so we recommend this for people with oily and combination skin types. Once on, it feels soft, gentle, and breathable, covering up any redness around the cheeks and darkness under the eyes. Despite feeling weightless, its opaque coloring leveled out inconsistencies and brightened our complexion. Did we mention it comes with a mineral sunscreen of SPF 25 protection? A true win.

Who It’s For: The mineral SPF included in the foundation makes it a great pick for sensitive skin. We also loved how it didn’t settle into any fine lines or wrinkles. The product almost moves along with our facial expressions, without sinking into our pores. And while we love the dewy finish of it on its own, a nice setting powder might be the cherry on the cake for a perfect look.

Worth Noting: A mineral-reef safe SPF 25 is baked into the formula.

Coverage: Medium | Shades: 36 Size: 1 oz | Finish: Natural, dewy

Stephanie, tester: “My skin absorbed the foundation and it dried quite quickly, which is a major perk. It sits on my skin without settling into it. The SPF coverage also makes me feel protected since I could feel the foundation sitting ever-so-slightly on my face.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Powders are back in a major way, and they’re not the drying, crumbling formulas of yesteryear. Pair that with the fact that Dior is known for their elegant finishes, and this matte foundation is the perfect standout. Our tester, Roxanne, agrees, noting that the texture and coverage this powder delivers are what make it sensational. Our tester found that light layers of primer or concealer, paired perfectly with the powder, first totally negated the issue.

Who It’s For: Anyone who wants easy powder coverage for everyday, that’s not too heavy but leaves skin looking smooth, will appreciate this compact. However, it doesn’t have SPF, so it's important to make sure you add a sunscreen step.

Worth Noting: Because it’s a matte, no-shine finish, it does take a bit of experimenting to prevent the powder from caking or settling into fine lines.

Roxanne, tester: “This foundation is exactly what it says in the name: velvet. It has such a smooth finish that lasts for quite some time. I found myself running my fingers over my face throughout the day to see if that velvety texture remained, and it did.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: Westman Atelier’s Vital Skin formula works as a foundation and a concealer. It can achieve a minimalist look or be built upon for maximal coverage. Add on the fact that it travels well, and you’ve really got a one-stop shop for most of your base makeup needs. We were impressed with just how creamy and easily we could sweep this magical stick across our skin.

Who It’s For: The consistency allowed us to cover blemishes, redness, and the hollows around the eyes to create an evened-out and enhanced look. We found using our fingers was the best way to spread the creamy formula. For more targeted areas (like under our eyes), we dabbed the sponge around and used the stick as a concealer. Overall, the formula blended well around the face, and we were able to achieve the look we desired, which was a natural, skin-like finish. Don’t worry; It did not look patchy, nor did it cling onto the dry areas of the skin—we didn’t even notice any creasing on our foreheads. It almost melted into the skin to create a very natural yet bright look.

Worth Noting: It may be beneficial to add on a contouring stick or a bronzer to fully round out the overall look, as this serves more as a light base.

Coverage: Medium | Shades: 21 |  Size: 1 oz | Finish: Natural

Sunita, tester: “I did not notice more texture on my face after applying this foundation. I liked the coverage it gave me, and I'm aware that I could build it further.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: We have to give it to Gucci here; they truly did not hold back on creating one of the most impressive and luxurious foundations. Though this is a full-coverage foundation, which may not be to everyone’s liking. Still, we only needed one pump to cover all our imperfections, concealing our darker shadows, uneven skin tone, and bumpy textures to create a smooth surface. While it’s noticeable that we are wearing makeup, it’s not cakey or overly dewy either. The opaque formula dries down almost instantly to reveal a matte, natural-looking layer over the surface. All it took was one pump and one sweep, and we looked as though we were touched up by a professional makeup artist.

Who It’s For: Despite its matte finish and full coverage, it’s neither heavy nor drying, making it a great fit for those who want an elated look. As a matter of fact, it’s impossible to detect any kind of feel on the skin other than a comfortable, breathable sensation. It was easy, therefore, to go about our day without the foundation beginning to run, melt, or dry up. It remained perfectly intact, hiding our pores and creases expertly without requiring touch-ups.

Worth Noting: Apply this with either your hands or a brush, as we found, a sponge would absorb too much of the product.

Coverage: Full | Shades: 40 | Size: 1 oz | Finish: Soft matte

Stephanie, tester: “The foundation melted into my skin. The product dried quickly and absorbed into my skin and moved with my skin as I went through my day.”

Updated on June 30, 2025 @ 01:53PM: With 42 impressive shades, this swipe-and-go foundation stick works for concealer touch-ups as well as it does for full coverage. With ceramides, peptides, kelp extract, and butterfly lavender extract, it treats skin as it blurs dark circles, spots, or blemishes. Our tester Carrie loved that the stick is impossible to mess up. And while you probably don’t need them—touch-ups are super easy. Just swipe a little more wherever you need it and blend out.

Who It’s For: Anyone who is looking for a clean foundation that’s simple and foolproof to use will appreciate this easy-to-apply multitasker. Our tester also loves this for anyone on the go—it’s a great, travel-friendly option to stash in your purse or carry-on.

Worth Noting: It may require a few touch-ups for long wear.

Carrie, tester: “There isn't anything I would change about this product! It is so easy to use and is perfect for packing and traveling. It felt great on my skin, and the coverage was just right. It wasn't too heavy at all, but still looked pretty on. I don't think there is anything I can complain about with this product; it's just a great foundation stick!”

Our Testing Process

Il Makiage Woke Up Like This Flawless Base Foundation at Amazon Cheap Erlebnisweltfliegenfischen Jordan Outlet editors, we carefully recorded our findings on each foundation’s coverage, feel, and finish. We observed whether they felt hydrating, provided a matte finish, allowed for buildable coverage, and if the makeup pilled. We considered everything from lightweight feel to shade range before narrowing our selection to these best foundations for mature skin, while also taking advice from top makeup artists.

LOréal Paris Age Perfect Serum Foundation at Amazon

  • Coverage: Makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff-Kendricks believes that coverage is a make-or-break consideration for mature skin, and always recommends light to medium formulas. If you have dry skin, opt for foundations made specifically for dry skin Why We Love It powder foundations that are dry. “Heavy foundations can sometimes emphasize fine lines and wrinkles, while light to medium coverage helps create a more natural and youthful appearance,” says Sheriff-Kendricks. “This coverage level helps even out the skin tone without looking heavy or cakey." Makeup artist J Guerra chimes in that “overly matte or powder-heavy products can accentuate texture and dryness as well, which is why liquid formulas with sheer, buildable coverage tend to be more forgiving.”
  • Application: During our test, we used a brush and a Beautyblender to see how the formula blended into our skin. Sheriff-Kendricks says that brushes “can provide even coverage as well as precision application, helping to minimize the risk of tugging or pulling on the skin, which is important for mature skin that is more delicate.” That being said, brushes can also create the look of streaks, depending on the formula. On such occasions, we found the use of a Beautyblender to be much more effective. As a third option, Sheriff recommends using your fingers. “The warmth of your hands helps to melt the product into the skin, giving a natural finish,” she says. “Gently pat and press the foundation onto the skin, focusing on areas where you need coverage the most.”
  • Ingredients: As our skin ages, it becomes more and more beneficial to opt for foundations that provide skin care benefits on top of coverage. “Our skin tends to become more sensitive and dry, along with more pigmented and textured," explains NYC-based board-certified dermatologist Teresa Song, M.D., FAAD. "Therefore, foundations for mature skin should be minimalistic yet nourishing, with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, niacinamide, and soy.” She adds that antioxidants like “vitamin C, mandarin extract, ginseng, and aloe” help protect against sun damage as well.

Your Questions, Answered

What foundation type is best for mature skin?

Women with mature skin should opt for lightweight foundations with low to medium coverage, says Dr. Song. “Liquid and light creams are preferred over powder and heavy creams because they will blend and stay on the skin better, while powders tend to be too drying and heavy creams may lead to buildup and pilling.” Not only pilling, but Guerra reminds us that heavy creams might “settle into fine lines or wrinkles.”

As for the finish, you typically want a “dewy or satin finish,” says Sheriff-Kendricks, which typically comes from “foundations that offer hydration.” Guerra seconds this statement, saying that “going for lightweight, hydrating, and luminous foundations is typically best to ensure a radiant, dewy finish as this gives the skin a youthful glow.”

What foundation will not settle into wrinkles?

From all of the foundations we tested, we made sure only to include the ones where we did not see any creasing occur, even after 30 minutes of wear. Still, Sheriff-Kendricks and Guerra have a few tips and tricks to further ensure the foundation will not settle into wrinkles.

To prep the skin, Guerra recommends starting with a "rich moisturizer that plumps the skin" to reduce the risk of foundation sliding into creases. Next, he layers on a primer to help makeup last longer and create a smooth base that "fills in fine lines and prevents foundation from settling or caking."

He stresses opting for “light and buildable coverage," usually in the form of liquid or serum foundations, as they're "generally better at avoiding creases.” And as a final tip, you can also “blot any excess oil to prevent buildup in creases throughout the day.”
