The ups and downs of spring’s impending arrival have officially begun. And by this I mean… one day it’s warm—a.k.a., “fake spring”—and the next we’re back to winter temperatures and dark, dreary days. It certainly doesn’t do good for my mood, but here’s what I’m doing to combat the ebbs and flows—I’m eyeing spring staples and infusing my closet with Look of the Day to bring a little bit of spring joy in now.

Kaia Gerber’s recent outfit brought in said spring joy—and it reminded me that it’s time to give one very important category a refresh: my outerwear. The model stepped out in Los Angeles, and while the weather on the West Coast is definitely different on the east, there are plenty of style lessons to take away from her latest off-duty ensemble. Gerber created a base look with comfy navy trousers and a green sweater; warm, versatile pieces that everyone should have on hand now. I’ve waxed poetic Politics & Social Issues, and thanks to Gerber, I will do it again; it’s no secret that a trench coat is a spring wardrobe hero. It’s a lightweight though practical top layer that delivers warmth and style in one comfy (the more oversized, the better!) essential that, in my opinion, makes every outfit look 10 times more expensive. The luxe top layer is synonymous with elegance—just take a look at some other Hollywood icons who’ve been seen in trench coats, like Amal Clooney and Angelina Jolie, two celebs known for refined, classy, timeless dressing ethos. Gerber certainly falls into that category, though given the fact she’s from another generation, it’s also worth mentioning that this proves just how ageless a trench coat is.

Trench coats are obviously classy, but they’re also practical and the ideal transitional piece because they lean more lightweight and are (oftentimes) designed with a water-resistant exterior essential for spring rainstorms. But hey, April showers bring May flowers, right? You can wear thick sweaters underneath on those colder days, like Gerber did, or you can throw it over a cropped white tee for a cool French-girl look. The versatility is key here.
