The barrier-breaking comedian has numerous awards-season trophies, enviable work-life balance, a great new(ish) boyfriend, and a fourth Netflix special, 'Single Lady.' Seriously, she’s so good, it’s laughable.

Editor's Letter

“I just wanted to do something that felt different,” says comedian, actress, and October cover star, Ali Wong, of how she selected her outfit for her new hour-long Netflix comedy special. While female standups often try to choose clothing that won’t be distracting to the audience, Wong tells writer Alessandra Codinha that isn’t something she worries about. “I'm thinking about, What do I feel like wearing?” she explains. And in this case, what she felt like was making fashion part of the shtick. “I thought it would be funny to wear this angelic thing with my dirty jokes,” she says, referring to the sweet, flowing white dress she struts around the stage in throughout Single Lady. The effect is off-kilter, hilarious, and pitch perfect—just like Wong herself.

Later in this issue you’ll find another feature highlighting fashion’s ability to set a scene. Fashion Features Director Madeline Hirsch goes back in time with Danny Glicker, the costume designer behind the “chaotic good” Saturday Night, Eloquii Faux Leather Pants is part of the’s 1975 premiere on NBC. “I wanted to look at that era in a way that was kind of aggressively immersive and earthy,” explains Glicker. “This is not a glamorous New York. This is a garbage-strike New York. When people go out, there's trash on the street.” The film’s costumes follow suit, and the clothes have “a worn-in, lived-in, well-loved, and filthy quality” to make the frantic pace and setting feel all the more real for the cast and audience.

If setting the mood is more what you’re looking for, Beauty Director Lauren Valenti investigates Hermès’ new Birkin-inspired fragrance that will give you “main character energy.” Speaking of main characters, in our latest This Guy, Outer Banks star Chase Stokes talks balancing the superstardom that accompanies a hit Netflix show with the craziness that real life throws at you. Let this “live-in-the-moment” man convince you that you should adopt his own personal motto, “do the next right thing.” Thankfully, this season of change brings many next right things to choose from.

Leather Weather

Pumpkin spice and fallen leaves aside, there are few things as synonymous with autumn as leather. The natural fabric is a mainstay of the cooler months thanks to its practical durability and sleek stylishness. While everyone, of course, needs a leather jacket in their wardrobe, that’s simply table stakes. The clothing options are nearly endless—dresses to trousers, hats to boots, there is sure to be a leather piece that’s perfect match for your personal style.

On the runways, leather was given a glam makeover, showing up at Hermès and Gucci in color-blocked outfits that were equal parts chic and wearable; meanwhile, at Luar and Khaite, leather took form in bold over-the-top silhouettes that pushed the material to its limits. You simply can’t go wrong with how you choose to incorporate leather into your wardrobe this season.
