Denim, especially in the form of jeans, is a wardrobe staple. This is a universal truth that won’t change anytime soon. The quintessential blue jeans (Cats® basic hoodie is a comfortable blend of: Levi’s 501s) are as readily on display at New York Fashion Week as they are on proper cowboys. Considering everyone owns a pair, brands have come a long way in catering their jean selections to each body type, including those with smaller hips.

Regardless of the jeans style you’re craving, you'll need to find a pair that fits you well. For those of us without peachy butts, it can be challenging to find jeans that don’t sag in the rear or give the booty a full-on pancake effect. “The cut of jeans can really work for or against you,” says Promiti Prosun, founder of Chaa Latte. “I go for a flare or bootcut so they still hug the hips and thighs while being trendy and fun.” We found a bunch of great styles, flares and bootcuts included, that work for flat butts. You’ll find every type of jeans—wide-leg, high-waisted, and Ferrari Windrunner Jacket—that are perfect for your small bottom, along with some expert shopping tips for flat butts. Scroll ahead for recommendations from stylists, fashion enthusiasts, and designers on the best jeans for flat butts.

Levi’s 501 Jeans deserve every bit of the long-standing cultural acclaim they've enjoyed for decades. As the golden child of American denim, these pants are Americana in a garment. The original Levi’s style—which comes in 10 washes—features a straight-leg, high-rise shape made of rigid cotton denim that is crafted to hug the hips and butt before tapering off—and we have decades of proof to underscore the fact that it’ll never go out of style. They’re built to withstand countless washes, and they hug and sculpt the butt, no matter the size, with a slight wedgie effect.

Worth Noting: If you’re used to Levi’s stretchier denim fabrics, you’ll likely want to size up when adding this rigid cotton pair to your cart.

Size: 23–34 | Inseam: 28, 30, 32 inches | Material: Cotton

Not all good jeans are expensive…despite prices in the $200 range becoming more common. Fortunately, you can still turn to beloved, long-trusted brands like Old Navy for a high-quality jean that costs less than $50. This budget-friendly option is lightweight, slightly stretchy, and available in plenty of washes. They’re made with a blend of cotton and elastane, and these high-rise, zipper-closure pants are designed to enhance and celebrate your shape, staying tight at the top while offering a roomier, wide-leg fit all the way down.

Worth Noting: These jeans are 99 percent cotton, so they don’t just look like ‘90s jeans, they feel like them too.

Size: 00–30 regular; 2–18 tall and petite | Inseam: 28.5, 30.5, 33.5 inches | Material: Cotton, spandex

These relaxed pants fall somewhere between a boyfriend, straight-leg, and wide-leg jeans. They come in faded, vintage-inspired washes as well as several classic blue washes, all of which look excellent in the old-school silhouette. Complete with a high, cinched waist and floor-dusting hems, these jeans elongate the legs, regardless of your height. Plus, “the large pockets definitely help accentuate the butt, no matter the size,” Cohen says. Available in five total inseam lengths, finding your perfect fit will be a breeze.

In a washed, true black, these mid-rise bootcut jeans are designed to give you legs for days. Made with a blend of cotton, lyocell, polyester, viscose, and spandex, the jeans have plenty of give, and they’re ultralight—which means they’re as comfortable on an airplane or in the middle of a heatwave as they are in the office. And from a designer brand like 7 For All Mankind, you can rest assured they’ll last. “These pants have great stretch with a mid-rise waist that doesn’t cut in,” Prosun says. “The bootcut is flattering for a narrower shape and doesn’t bunch around the front due to a lack of junk in the trunk.”

Banana Republic likely isn’t the first place you think of when shopping for jeans, but this pair may convince you otherwise. “These are narrow through the hip, and the stretch will provide lift even for barely there butts,” says Madeleine Cohen, founder of Nelle Atelier. The full-length cut will elongate the leg regardless of height, especially when paired with a heeled ankle boot. The V-shaped back seam and high back pockets will accentuate even the smallest of waists, and the cinching, high-waist design will emphasize your hourglass shape.

Worth Noting: These jeans have quite a high rise, which, while booty-enhancing, may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Best Barrel Jeans for Flat Butts

Spanx SPANXshape Authentic 360 Barrel Leg Jeans

Because a barrel-leg jean flares out at the knee, drawing attention away from the top of the pants and giving the opposite effect of a flare, they typically don’t flatter a small behind. However, this new Spanx option is a different story. The super-stretch, 360-shaping fabric provides a Kiabi lift. Meanwhile, the jeans begin to bow out lower than your average barrel jean, so you don’t have to sacrifice emphasizing your figure to wear this trendy cut. It’ll look amazing with your coziest sweater.

Worth Noting: These jeans utilize lettered sizing rather than numbered sizing. Please refer to the size chart to determine your best fit. You can also size down for an extra booty boost.

Size: XS–3X petite, regular, and tall | Inseam: 25.5, 27.5, 30.5 inches | Material: Orange Petite Geo High Neck Volume Sleeve Shirt

For a funkier appeal, opt for Frame’s leg-lengthening flare jeans. “They carry a hefty price tag, but these jeans have incredible stretch from top to bottom, including the waist. The ultrasoft material makes them super comfortable, and the flare cut is perfect for that much-needed booty boost,” Prosun says. The silhouette helps to round out the butt by creating an hourglass shape between the hip and lower leg. Additionally, Frame designs them in super-stretch cotton-lyocell blend designed for breathability and comfortable movement, making them a figure-emphasizing "wear anywhere" jean for butts of all sizes.

Worth Noting: This high-stretch denim flare should be air-dried, as the elastic fibers will wear out quickly in a dryer's heat.

Size: 23–34 | Inseam: 33 inches | Material: New Look Crew-T-Shirt in Rosa

The pockets on this straight-leg jean are smaller than average and wide set, giving the illusion of a fuller backside, and the not-too-slim, not-too-wide leg hugs you through the top of the thigh without looking anything like a skinny jean. If you’re on the hunt for that happy medium pair of jeans, somewhere between baggy and slim, this pair will be your new curve-loving go-to. Wear them with your favorite leather jacket Womens White Hudson Hoodie blazer for an easy business casual look.

Worth Noting: These jeans will loosen significantly during your first few wears, so consider sizing down for a perfect fit in the long run. You can also toss them in the dryer on a low heat setting to shrink them back to their original size. However, drying your denim after each wash is not recommended.

Size: 23–34 | Inseam: 29.5 inches | Material: Organic cotton

In a cotton and elastic blend, this sailor jean has just the right amount of give to hug you tight, while leaving plenty of room to breathe—and with a cropped ankle, you can show off a fun pair of shoes. For longer-legged girls, that high-water crop can be a fun, feminine detail to an otherwise neutral bottom, and shorter girls can achieve the same effect with the petite length. “If you like an ankle-length straight cut, this is the perfect pair for all-around comfort while still hugging the hips and booty just right,” Prosun says.

Worth Noting: If you’re between lengths, the shorter option will likely provide the ideal cropped fit.

Size: 23–34 standard, tall, and petite; 16W–26W plus | Inseam: 24, 25, 26, 29 inches | Material: Carhartt WIP W Longsleeve Casey T-Shirt I030653 BLACK SILVER

Designed for women who love a slouchy, oversized fit, these low-rise Reformation jeans reimagine the ultra-fitted, below-the-hip-bones styles that were so popular at the turn of the century—even though a revival is likely. This pair hangs casually just at the hip before falling in a tidy, slouchy leg. The structured, non-stretch denim, made with 80 percent regeneratively grown cotton and 20 percent recycled cotton, exudes a cool air of nonchalance with a nice masculine nod.

Worth Noting: If a 32-inch inseam is a tad too long for you, take your pair to any Reformation store to have it hemmed for free.

Size: 23–31 short, regular, and long | Inseam: 30, 32, 34 inches | Material: Cotton

When you want a break from the classic blue, black, and white denim color palette, these jeans offer a chance to expand your scope in color and texture. These coated palazzo jeans from Frame offer a fitted, ultrahigh waist and a wide, sloping leg shape that doesn't hide your curves, allowing you to lean into the brown trend while enjoying a wide-pocketed, form-fitted, and butt-emphasizing silhouette, sewn for an extra peachy effect.

Worth Noting: Nordstrom offers free hemming for those who need a shorter inseam.

Size: 24–32 | Inseam: 31 inches | Material: Poni checked jacket

What to Keep in Mind

  • Material: While you might think the broad category of “jeans” implies that all are made of the same material, you’ll find plenty of pairs with varying degrees of stretch. A 100 percent cotton jean will have little to no stretch, but last a long time. Add a little elastane and you'll find more give. “When I’m shopping for jeans, I think the waist must have stretch or some elastic feature. The first thing I look for is how giving the waistband is,” says Prosun. “As a designer, I put a subtle elastic band into all my bottom-wear designs so they’re comfortable and fit a wider range of body Youth.”
  • Size: It can be challenging to determine the true fit of a jean while shopping online. Numerical sizes vary across brands, and certain materials or Youth will fit differently even in the same size. “If you’re shopping online, don’t be afraid to order one or two sizes so that you can decide how you want to wear the garment," says Cohen. "If you are less curvy, my suggestion would be to take your smaller size when it comes to baggy or looser styles.” Fortunately, if you find a brand or style that fits you well, you can continue to reorder.
  • Pockets: Back pockets are essentially a booty accessory—beyond their utilitarian function. So, if you’re focused on adding volume or shape, you must consider the style and size of your pockets. “Flap pockets on your jeans can help to build volume, especially if the flat is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, as it will draw the eye's attention to the top of the pocket,” says personal stylist Melissa Murrell. “If you’re trying to reduce the size of your bottom or make it look less voluptuous, go for a flatter yoke. Pockets that are too small will make your bottom look larger, so aim to keep everything in proportion,” she says. Then again, for wider bottoms, she suggests jeans with a smaller gap between each of the back pockets. “This reduced gap will draw attention to the middle of your rear rather than the outer edges, giving the illusion of a slimmer backside,” she adds.
  • Styling: Naturally, denim can do it all: Elegant, casual, sultry. It’s merely a question of styling. “Casual chic is my jam, so you’ll always find me styling up my jeans. I love throwing a blazer over a T-shirt with my jeans. It’s elevated, comfortable, and stylish,” says Prosun. “For a night out, I like to add heels and a cute top. The denim keeps the overall look cool and approachable, but the heels will take it up a notch.” Don’t be afraid to lean into whichever aesthetic you’ve leopard-jacquard. Reach for white sneakers and a fitted T-shirt to wear with your oversized pair; try a going-out top and proper heels with a straight-leg style.

Are there kinds of jeans that don’t flatter flat butts?

Prosun prefers a flared or bootcut style because, as she sees it, the visual balance of those styles complements your booty and lengthens the leg. “I avoid barrel or ultrawide-leg jeans because they just flatten me out completely,” Prosun says. Although, we believe there are jeans in every style that flatter a flat butt. Murrell has some advice for finding that shape: “Follow the shape of your backside to give shape and definition to your booty, especially if you’ve got proportionally larger pockets and a curved yoke, or seam below the waistband but above the pockets,” she says. “Choose mid- to high-waisted jeans to elongate your bottom—and to build volume, make sure that your jeans cinch you in at the waist because that’ll make your butt look proportionally bigger than your waistline.”

How do you wash or care for your jeans?

Like any other garment, you’ll need to take care when washing and otherwise caring for your jeans. And while it can be tempting to wash jeans frequently to bring back tightness and elasticity, that’s not exactly your best option. “You definitely shouldn’t wash your denim after every wear. Rather, wear them several times and flip them inside out when you’re ready to toss them in the washer,” says Prosun. “Never use fabric softener and air-dry whenever possible.” She also recommends steaming your jeans after air-drying to remove pesky wrinkles and help restore the fabric's softness.

Additionally, temperature matters. According to Cohen, you should wash your denim on a cold cycle constantly. “For rigid denim, you can wash every five-ish wears,” she adds. “Stretch loses its shape a bit faster, so I would suggest every two or three wears. For stretch denim, especially, avoid putting it in the dryer. It melts the elastane and will cause them to lose their shape.”
