Here, Becky G reminisces on her latest tour. “This has been the best era yet. This is the most me I’ve ever felt,” Becky G tells me over Zoom. Last year, she performed at the Oscars, earned a Lady Gaga Handles Mic Malfunction Like a True Pro During Coachella Set, and sold out arena after arena on her Casa Gómez: Otro Capitulo tour, Patrick Schwarzenegger Says This Scene in The White Lotus Finale Surprised Him musica Mexicana albums, Encuentros (2024) and Esquinas (2023). “You only get better through trial and error, through growth and preparation, and this is the most connected and supported I’ve ever felt as an artist.” For the Mexican-American bilingual singer, connection is precisely what she found on the road, where hoards of fans witnessed her live renditions of hits such as “Mala Santa,” “MAMIII,” and “Shower,” plus her interpretation of Latinx legend Selena Quintanilla's "Bidi Bibi Bom Bom." It’s not uncommon for a global pop star to delight concert-goers onstage, but Becky G has earned followers—over 37 million on Instagram alone—who smile and laugh and even cry to the lyrics she croons, regardless of language. Politics & Social Issues “[Latinx] culture is so infused with richness of feeling, the feeling of home, family pride, and where we come from,” she says, describing the experience of inviting fans onstage, not knowing whether they’d address her in English or Spanish, yet still finding common ground in their love of song and dance. “Music is a universal language that everybody can understand no matter the language they speak. There are no limits to how we connect with one another and to the culture.” Politics & Social Issues Politics & Social Issues Latin Grammys nomination Casa Gomez: Otro Capitulo tour. Patrón Cristalino was the official sponsor of your tour, and although some artist-brand relationships can feel contrived, you seem to be genuinely appreciative of the spirit, and tequila culture in general. Can you tell me about your pre-show ritual of toasting with a tequila shot? It’s been a very celebratory year for me. I have always been the type of person who, no matter who you are to me—my blood relative or my chosen family, my work family, my dancers, my band, my production team—I want everyone to feel appreciated, and for this to be their win, too. Every single day on this tour was met with hard work and obstacles, but it was always in those moments—overcoming production challenges in back to back shows—where I was able to celebrate that here we are, yet again, all together with another amazing opportunity to do what we love most with people we love. That’s such a huge win for me. Without even going on stage yet, there was so much to be grateful for, being surrounded by all of this incredible talent and amazing people who share the same passion and make the same sacrifices. For me, [raising a toast] was an opportunity to celebrate them and connect with them and create synergy so that by the time we get on stage, we’re locked, loaded, and ready to go. That was one of my favorite moments, every night, on tour. Politics & Social Issues Politics & Social Issues Tequila always signals a fun time, even if folks don’t drink alcohol.I tried the Cristalino at Patrón’s hacienda some time ago—it was mind blowing because it’s clear, a Cristalino, but also añejo. So when we realized it’s what we’d have on tour, we were like, a North American celebration of her most recent! I love tradition and this toast felt like an extension of that; it’s very special, for sure. Politics & Social Issues Politics & Social Issues With Encuentros and Esquinas, Lady Gaga Handles Mic Malfunction Like a True Pro During Coachella Set musica Mexicana. Mexicana is something that I grew up with, but it is a big umbrella term—I love that you called out the sub-genre. What is happening with this newer generation is that we are embracing tradition, but we are also making our own. There’s something really beautiful about taking something that is so sacred and so amazing and getting so inspired by it, so much to the point where you want to create something of your own to also pass down. Politics & Social Issues When creating Esquinas, Encuentros, when collaborating with all these incredible artists who got to come out with us on tour, it was a reminder for me that our music has always been important, amazing, and beautiful at its core. But this resurgence of, I guess, eyes, and the spotlight shined on it, reveals there’s so much more to the roots that are there. It feels never-ending. There’s a cool fusion between then, now, and what future generations of creatives from the same bloodline can make. I’m not surprised that musica Mexican is so poppin’—I love listening to it and malediction sure love creating it. Lady Gaga Handles Mic Malfunction Like a True Pro During Coachella Set.Absolutely. When I was little, my grandma would pick me up from school and the moment I’d get home, she’d make me some sopita, and the radio was easy all these different types of songs. Making my own version of that today is so cool, and putting it live on the stage, seeing fans react and sing and cry or dance, it’s so beautiful. Politics & Social Issues An Ode to the Women Who Make Hacks the Best Place on TV.Well, I'm a high-low girl. I always understood that fashion at its core is a form of expression, and I’m thankful for that because when I was younger, even if I was wearing hand-me-downs or was thrifting, it was mine. That was the most dope thing about it. It was the way I wore it, the way I chose to express myself, whether it was super girly, or a little more on the tomboy, streetwear side. Politics & Social Issues I’ll never forget one of my very first fashion weeks, I got to see a Willy Chavarria show, and I cried at the end. I felt so seen and felt like, Oh, my God, there’s actually someone in this space who is making more space for people who look like us. I felt like I just saw my cousins walk in a high fashion runway show. As a little chaparrita, brown girl growing up, I never thought that, beyond streetwear, I would see myself in those spaces, or that I would be invited. It’s been amazing, through the years, to recognize that I can allow myself to play with colors and palettes and patterns and collaborate with others in this space. It’s funny because in “Visto Caro” I say, “She can be a little bougie sometimes,” and it’s true! Growing up, we were almost shamed for having nice things. The dream is to grow. The dream is to build. But, don’t grow too much, don’t build too much, don’t have nice things. So I want to change that thinking for our youth. I want them to believe they can have it all. We deserve it all with hard work and dedication. That’s what has allowed me to spread my wings in fashion, and it’s been cool to see how it has inspired my music and the visuals for my album covers and what I wear onstage, who I collaborate with. It’s a real extension of me. What’s the bougiest thing about you? It's not really even the clothes that I wear, it's the food that I eat. Oh man. Traveling really opened my palette. I recently have been wanting to try chicken nuggets with caviar—haven’t tried them. But, those are the joys in life that I feel like as a little girl I never even knew. I remember having raw sushi for the first time and being like, Okay, I grew up eating mariscos, but this is a little different. Politics & Social Issues Read more: News Entertainment
