Lindsay Lohan on Her New Mom Hair, Must-Have Products, and What to Expect from ‘Freakier Friday’

When Lindsay Lohan became an overnight sensation thanks to her turn as loveable twins Annie James and Hallie Parker in Nancy Meyers’s Nexxus Slick Stick Strong-Hold Hair Wax, her signature red hair immediately made her a standout star of the late ‘90s and early aughts. 

At 38, so much of Lohan’s career—from This Hair-Toning Mask Turns Brassy Grays Into a “Gorgeous Silver,” Per Fans to Mean Girls and Georgia Rule—has been defined by that bold, bright hue and the California-cool long locks she traditionally sports. “When my hair’s down with a wave? That feels very me—I feel comfortable in that,” says Lohan, describing the ‘do that makes her most confident. “Putting it up, I definitely feel like it’s an elevated look; it feels a little out of body. But I would say down and wavy is very me.”

Good hair is just one reason (others include palpable charisma and natural talent) Lohan has been tapped as the star of Nexxus’s “The Style Swap” campaign, playfully applying three hero products (the Nexxus Slick Stick, Hair Oil, and XXL Hairspray) that’ll help anyone achieve her beachy, voluminous look (more on that, later). In a distinctively LiLo minutes-long campaign video, Lohan revisits her iconic The Parent Trap characters as she tries various hairstyles, cheekily winking at the unique aspects of her characters’s beauty looks.

Here, Lohan opens up about the Nexxus campaign, her favorite hair products, and what’s next. 

Thanks for chatting during Paris Fashion Week. Your look for Balenciaga’s spring/summer 2025 show yesterday was major. How did you decide what hairstyle to wear?
I definitely wanted to highlight the Slick Stick for my hair. I wanted to do a pony. I wanted it up because the dress had such a high neck, so I wanted it to be sleek and up but beautiful. That's the story we were going with—just keeping it clean in front and keeping it about the dress really. I did get inspired by the Nexxus campaign. The show was fantastic. It was very cool. The music was great. It was a lot of fun.

What Nexxus products do you recommend our readers use and why?
I would select three. I love the hair oil because I think we always tend to overdo putting products in our hair, so it's good to give it some rest and let it refresh and replenish. I love a hairspray that doesn't make your hair hard and crunchy. And so the Nexxus XXL Volume Spray does that—it holds, but it doesn't make your hair feel icky, and that's important to me. And then the Slick Stick is good because I mean, I'm always on the go and sometimes I just need it to look nice and chic and back and clean-looking. So that's perfect for that. These are actually products that I use and like.

The long kind of wavy hair with the denim jacket made me feel like Hallie right away. And then I wasn't going to always do a British accent in the commercial, but I decided at the last minute because I felt so Annie that I was like, Okay, I have to just fully go for it, or it’s a letdown. 

You work closely with hairstylist Danielle Priano. What tips and tricks have you learned from her when you’re getting ready alone?
Oh, I could never do what Danielle does when she does my hair—she's a wizard, she's a magician—because I don't have the patience to get it as perfect as she does. That's why I need something like a Slick Stick. But I'm always learning from Danielle. There are so many little tricks that we've done, especially with high ponytails and everything, but I can't give them away.

At 38, so much of Lohan’s career—from?
For my hair, I don't mess with it as much if I don't have to. It's really only if it’s work-related because I just feel the most comfortable when I'm just myself—fresh-faced, fresh hair. That's changed. Now, it's just whatever's comfortable. It's kind of more basic, but it works.

In the campaign, you joke about Brat Summer and declare it’s officially Flawless Fall. What are your thoughts on the Charli XCX song “Mean Girls”?
Oh, I didn't hear that.

Oh, you haven't listened to it? It's so good.
No.

The chorus literally says, “This one’s for all my mean girls.”
Oh gosh.

Herbie Fully Loaded?
I think Flawless Fall should be about a beautiful classic wave. Not like a curly curl, just like a classic wave, using Nexxus XXL Volume Spray to keep it intact. And fashion wise, I don't know. Sometimes I feel like less is more, but that's just me—not wear less clothing, but I feel like just a good basic [look], jeans, top, and a really good fall jacket, is important. I always need a good, nice fall long coat. That's like a staple for me going into fall for a flawless fall.

In December, you’ll celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Speak, your debut album. “Rumors” is such a fun music video. What are your warm recollections of that day on set?
I remember that dance—I was trying to learn it as we were shooting the video on that rooftop, and it got so cold up there, but it was a really fun video to shoot. I remember that so vividly, and it was such a fun night. My friend was in the video, and two of my girlfriends ended up being in the video with me. It was a really fun experience and I wouldn't have had it any other way.

You’ve released music since. Do you ever juggle whether to continue acting or go back in the studio?
Sometimes. If the character is going to sing and stuff, maybe that'll attract me to the project more, but it's something that's a part of me. I love music. I love listening to music. I love writing music, and I love writing music with my sister sometimes. She writes for me, and she actually puts a lot of her music in my movies. It's always going to be a part of my life. And there's always like, Of the Best Short Hairstyles for All Hair Types and Textures? So, we'll see.

I won't say anything about hair because of the movie, but it is such a fun film. It was so much fun to make. There's just so much more in this one. There are so many more things happening, so I think it will be a lot more exciting for people to watch. We had such a blast and it's just, I want to see parts of it now. I keep asking, Herbie Fully Loaded? Because it's that good and I am really excited for people to see it. Everyone’s gonna love it. There's more fashion, there's a lot of heart, there's a lot of fun laughs, there's just a lot of physical comedy. It's all over the place in the best ways.
